4th Annual FIT & LIT incentive program begins

It is hard to believe that we are beginning our fourth year of FIT & LIT! With the latest news reports on obesity in children, it is important to encourage them to exercise more. We also know that reading is such an integral part of everything we do each day and how we build new knowledge, that we want to encourage our students to read for pleasure and learning. Hence … FIT & LIT 2009.

On Friday, January 9th, we had our kick-off assembly to excite all the members of the Chickering Community to be balanced in their FIT and LIT endeavors. We started by showing a slideshow of how the students have been moving and reading since school began. Mrs. Gillis, one of our P.E. teachers, led us all in a great Cha cha dance. Then I read the students the book, Once Upon a Cool Motorcycle Dude by Kevin O’Malley.

We reviewed the ‘rules’ for recording minutes of exercising and reading. Parents need to sign each log* of 600 minutes (10 hours). Exercise can be any exercise they do from shoveling snow to formal sports activities. Reading can be by themselves, being read to or listening to books on tape/CD. Maybe your New Year’s Resolution was to exercise more or read for pleasure … why not join your children?

For each log of 600 minutes (10 hours) handed in, each participant will receive a sneaker charm or book charm. New students and Kindergarten students will receive a chain necklace to hold their charms. Students who have lost their necklaces can use string, yarn or gimp to hold their new charms earned. It was suggested to students last year, to put their necklace in a safe place until next year … a desk drawer or sock drawer. 😉

On Friday, February 13th, we end our FIT & LIT program with ‘Read Your Heart Out Day’ at school. We will celebrate our accomplishments on Friday, February 27th.

Happy Reading and Exercising to all!

Mrs. Chase
