Kindergarten authors and illustrators!

The kindergarten students have been learning about Eric Carle over the last two months.  We have beening learning about what he loves … “animals” … and how this is reflected in his books.  We have also been looking closely at how he creates his art … using colored tissue paper.

The children fell in love with his book From Head to Toe. When you read this book, you just can’t sit still.  You want to get up and do just what the book says.  We had to read this several times, once just wasn’t enough.  Eric Carle chose an animal and a movement the animal does; then a child show that they can do the same movement, too.  So we decided to try and create our own book modeled after Eric Carle’s book.  We called this book, From Head to Foot.  [We hope Eric Carle appreciates that “imitation is the greatest form of flattery.”]  We brainstormed animals and a movement the animal can do.  We then discussed if we could do the same movement.  Using tissue paper, the children each wrote and illustrated a two page spread.  Next we used this program called Voicethread.  It allows us to upload images of their book and record each child reading their two pages.

What is wonderful about this program is that you, the reader, can add comments to any or all pages of the book.  The students are excited about sharing their work with you.  I have set the ‘book’ to allow you to comment (I will moderate all comments first).  Please feel free to share your impressions and thoughts with the students.

We hope you enjoy this book as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Happy Reading and Listening,
the Kindergarten Students in Mrs. Delaney’s class, Mrs. Greene and Mrs. Chase
